I hear this all the time. I’ve tried F45, Jenny Craig, intermittent fasting, keto, vegan, low carb, trained 5 days a week with a PT; everything and I still can’t lose weight.
Here’s the thing. Your body always has a reason for you to hold onto weight if it’s out of balance.
What I mean here is many areas are missed when we look at metabolism and factors affecting weight, muscle mass and fat mass.
Primarily, what I see are under active thyroid, exhausted adrenal glands and imbalances in female hormone ratios (this can in fact happen at any age, but seems to be worse during peri menopause and menopause).
“But my Dr checked my thyroid and said it’s fine.”
Yes I’ve heard that too. A lot.
What a regular TSH reading tells us is how much the brain is stimulating the thyroid. It does NOT tell us anything about the function of the thyroid or what’s happening in the cells of the body.
So you might show a regular ‘normal’ reading on a blood test, when in fact what is happening in the body is something completely different!
Signs you might have an under active thyroid or hormonal imbalance affecting your weight.
- Intolerance to cold (cool to touch fingers, toes, butt, thighs, shivering in air con)
- Dry skin
- Brittle nails
- Hair falling out easily or thinning
- Tiredness when you wake up and around 2-3pm in the afternoon
- High heart rate
- Shallow breathing
- Waking in the middle of the night, then having trouble falling back to sleep
- Vaginal dryness / irritation
This list is not exhaustive, but it gives you a good idea if you said “yes” to at least 3 of these symptoms, it’s time to have your hormones checked out pronto!
As a Naturopath, I’ve never been overly into the weighing of foods or calorie counting so to speak, but when it comes to really trying to find out the reasons behind women not being able to lose weight, there’s ALWAYS something we can do.
E.g. Do you drink wine? It’s just like eating loads of sugar each day.
Do you sneak extra snacks from the kids plates into your mouth? (I have had to ask clients to place all the ‘extra’ food into a bowl that they would normally nibble on and it astounds them when they really see what they were eating).
Track your exercise? How hard to you work out vs how hard do you rest? They’re equally important.
So whilst diet and exercise are touted as the main components of weight loss, I’m a detective of weight loss. I help women discover the underlying reasons that might be blocking their weight loss efforts.
Sometimes it’s not the woman’s fault. It’s the way things are set up in society begging us to live on very little food and over exercise. This is NOT the way to lose weight healthily. It’s a fast track way to ruin your metabolism.
